To help our Budding Writers tell a good story, we read different types of stories together. We explore various writing techniques and discuss the themes presented in each piece of work. To inspire writers to think freely and get their creative juices running, the writers experience a range of brainstorming activities.
Some writers are working mainly for academic excellence, while some are striving for recognition at various writing competitions and self publishing opportunities. Teacher Libing is happy to support the students in their endeavours. I came across an online post about little home libraries and decided to share what we have at home. Over the years we have collected books that both children and adults enjoy. Some of these books are truly well-thumbed. While we buy books for our children, many enthusiastic family members and friends have also blessed us with books that deserve to be read over and over again. At the same time, as the children grow older, we have sorted out books for younger age groups and passed them on to those looking for their first collection. Library trips take top priority in our schedules. Hardly a week goes by without any trip to the library, whether to the nearest neighbourhood library or to bigger regional libraries. The elder daughter who is in primary school borrows regularly from the school library too. We take part in events organised by the library board and our local bookstores. With our fellow parent friends, we also encourage one another by sharing suitable titles and good deals. It's so hard to keep everyone reading regularly, because there are many events and sometimes, distractions. But as parents who are also educators, we value reading immensely. Reading nourishes our minds and heals our hearts. Start somewhere today, pick up a book for yourself and your child! To help him focus on listening to the words, we had 2 game buzzers and a stack of word cards.
Here are the steps: Place one word card on the mat. Teacher reads the word, sounding out the phonemes clearly. Student listens intently to check if all the sounds are correct. If the student thinks it is right, he will press the blue buzzer. If the student thinks it is wrong, he will press the orange buzzer. Teacher encourages the student to say the word based on what he thinks it is supposed to be. This student was able to point out some of the Teacher's (intentional) errors. Sometimes the teacher was a bit dramatic and slowed down the reading. The purpose was to get the student to listen properly, process mentally before giving a measured response. This student also volunteered to test the teacher. So he read the word cards, then tried to create some errors to trick the teacher into pressing the wrong buzzer. He was using his knowledge fully. Parents can repeat this activity as many rounds as the child would like to. Use other toys that make sounds if you don't have a buzzer. Turn this into a mini quiz show.
