Every book in my hands gets flipped through multiple times, as I ask myself, what kind of authentic learning can we get from this book? I am also often inspired to try different activities with the same books I had used in previous years.
Today we had a lot of fun using a story I had used with last year's 8-year-olds, but with a refreshed lesson concept. This year's learners read the story with me and in response, wrote a diary entry of the main character. I also suggested using one of the book illustrations as a base for the diary sketch. Thinking about how to phrase the diary entry got us discussing the use of adverbs and how the word 'finally' can be in different positions in a sentence. This got us doing a grammar point sketch - see the flexible Finally Character in the top right hand corner? Writing does not have to be a chore all the time. A simple start is better than none at all. Teacher Libing runs phonics workshops for parents and caregivers, as well as English Language lessons for children, teens and adult learners. They have been enjoying English lessons with Teacher Libing for a few weeks.
The children are 7 and 5 years old, and they are learning together. Teacher Libing has put together various storybook units for them to keep in touch with the English Language. The younger learner is focused on phonics and reading, while the older learner is working on grammar and sentence construction. They also do some activities together, such as reading instructions for craft making and playing language games. Click to contact us for more details if you'd like your kids and friends to learn together this holiday. Teacher Libing is based in Bukit Panjang. Travel to your home is also possible should the schedule fit. #getitrightsg #singapore #bukitpanjang #senja #teacher #NIE #MOE #reading #writing #tutor #private #tuition #English #Creativewriting #vocabulary #Storytelling #lessons #psle #secondaryschool #primaryschool #integratedprogramme #workshops #phonics #kindergarten #kids #esl #homebased #homeschooling #teenagers Recently our P5 students have been working on Story Endings. We used a "choose your adventure" approach. First we read a simple story setting. Then we thought of 2 possible good encounters for the main character. From each possible story path, we constructed the respective ending.
Next we shifted our perspectives by thinking of 2 possible bad encounters, followed by the respective endings. This writing exercise allowed the students and teacher to create 4 different story plots. The students do not end up with the same model composition memorised. Instead they learn how to stimulate their thinking cells to diversify the story flow. For a longer writing practice, we read a story together and constructed the rest of it. The student wrote in prose and utilised one of four endings - happy, sad, unexpected, reflection. #getitrightsg #online #Bukitpanjang #Singapore #secondary #school #texts #teenager #highschool #creativekids #vocabulary #trained #tutor #storytelling #English #workshops #holiday #moe #nie #lessons #primary #PSLE #creative #writing #reading #kids #children #books Why do we encourage our children and students to read? The wealth of knowledge in reading is simply too rich to be overstated. In this lesson, we used three books to help the student learn how to begin a story. While the books look like easy reads, the student had to think carefully about how the author chose to start the story. Did all the characters appear at the beginning? What was the setting? Which words did the author choose to attract the reader’s attention? Why was a question used instead of a statement? Other than reading more, as a teacher I take the student further into careful consideration of the impact of the author’s choice. This is vital in every creative writing course, especially for the upper primary and secondary school student-writers.
