​A group of nine-year-olds surprised me in the course of this semester, as we worked on language play using a variety of books, stories, and storytelling resources. What intrigued me was how they were able to pick up nuances in language use, such as understanding metaphors, without excessive explicit teaching. Immersion in a rich and stimulating language environment has proven to be the best way to get young learners started on any language of their choice.

In one of our sessions together, the students attempted generating metaphors of their own. No Google, no ChatGPT, no standard answer sheets. Just the students, a short story we had read together showing samples of metaphor expressions, and our brains put together to explore endless possibilities. Amazing synergy!

All of us should structure regular intervals for a digital detox and to get back to basics.

Thanks to the renewed excitement of international travel, we have some precious friends back in Singapore for a holiday. They have been enjoying English lessons with Teacher Libing for a few weeks.

The children are 7 and 5 years old, and they are learning together. Teacher Libing has put together various storybook units for them to keep in touch with the English Language. The younger learner is focused on phonics and reading, while the older learner is working on grammar and sentence construction. They also do some activities together, such as reading instructions for craft making and playing language games.

Theme 2 of our writing workshop was just as interesting. The students warmed up really quickly to one another while making stories with picture cards. This was an oral communication activity and we learned to respect the ideas of every participant, no matter how weird we might think the story would go. When asked to imagine what animal you would like to be for a day and how the animal would behave, you showed that your desires laid in the animals' unique characteristics and abilities.

The story we used for today's session was There's A Snake in my School! What kind of unexpected happenings would occur? How did each animal and human character behave? There was a good deal of laughter and some sharp observations of the story in print.

Students tried to come up with their versions of There's a ___ in ___. To encourage young writers to express themselves in words, availability of choices and an open mind from the teacher/facilitator are important. Withhold judgement and get the young writers to explain their concepts. Ask them questions to spur thinking, instead of saying immediately, "No, that's not logical."

We share the same message in all our writing workshops for the young ones - you don't need to be a perfect writer, you just need to be willing to try.
