This K1 student was doing a review of the sounds we had heard and read before. To help him focus on listening to the words, we had 2 game buzzers and a stack of word cards.
Here are the steps: Place one word card on the mat. Teacher reads the word, sounding out the phonemes clearly. Student listens intently to check if all the sounds are correct. If the student thinks it is right, he will press the blue buzzer. If the student thinks it is wrong, he will press the orange buzzer. Teacher encourages the student to say the word based on what he thinks it is supposed to be. This student was able to point out some of the Teacher's (intentional) errors. Sometimes the teacher was a bit dramatic and slowed down the reading. The purpose was to get the student to listen properly, process mentally before giving a measured response. This student also volunteered to test the teacher. So he read the word cards, then tried to create some errors to trick the teacher into pressing the wrong buzzer. He was using his knowledge fully. Parents can repeat this activity as many rounds as the child would like to. Use other toys that make sounds if you don't have a buzzer. Turn this into a mini quiz show.
