Do you know someone who struggles at times with spelling and vocabulary?
Most intermediate and advanced learners of English still have problems with spelling and vocabulary from time to time. Some reasons include a lack of familiarity with the topic and fading memory of spelling patterns in English. To help the upper primary and high school learners, more complicated vocabulary is broken down into syllables and introduced as a mini puzzle activity. This serves as scaffolding, or the bridge, for the thematic reading and writing tasks coming up. The words are written on paper, cut up and jumbled. Learners can try to guess the words by mixing and matching the parts. Recently our P5 students have been working on Story Endings. We used a "choose your adventure" approach. First we read a simple story setting. Then we thought of 2 possible good encounters for the main character. From each possible story path, we constructed the respective ending.
Next we shifted our perspectives by thinking of 2 possible bad encounters, followed by the respective endings. This writing exercise allowed the students and teacher to create 4 different story plots. The students do not end up with the same model composition memorised. Instead they learn how to stimulate their thinking cells to diversify the story flow. For a longer writing practice, we read a story together and constructed the rest of it. The student wrote in prose and utilised one of four endings - happy, sad, unexpected, reflection. #getitrightsg #online #Bukitpanjang #Singapore #secondary #school #texts #teenager #highschool #creativekids #vocabulary #trained #tutor #storytelling #English #workshops #holiday #moe #nie #lessons #primary #PSLE #creative #writing #reading #kids #children #books |
