1) Parent holds one sound, while the child holds the other.
2) Push the sounds towards each other slowly. As you close the gap, repeat the sounds represented by the letters.
3) When the sounds meet, say the sound together!
This activity helps the child to get involved physically by holding the letters. Many children also enjoy seeing the letters move closer to each other. The movement gives them a concrete understanding of sounding and blending when learning how to read.

Visual isolation of useful expressions in storytelling is a good strategy for learners who feel overwhelmed by all the vocabulary around them.

In this lesson, we read a comprehension passage and realised there were some suitable phrases for our next mini writing task - a child got lost and separated from his parents. Each phrase was highlighted in the comprehension text, then transferred to the paper slips individually.

The number of paper slips was also kept manageable at 8. There was no need to bombard the learner with more, especially as it was the first time he was trying to understand how the phrases conveyed the story's rich emotions.

Quality over quantity prevents our learners from getting anxious and feeling defeated. Storytelling and writing will become easier.
