Parents and caregivers can encourage children to draw more often -  visual representations are part of the note-taking process. The children have to consolidate what they learn and represent it in a graphic form. While learning idioms and proverbs, mere rote learning is ineffective. Allow the children to make diagrams or pictures based on the meaning of idioms and proverbs. They can make a simple picture, or a more advanced comic story. 

We can also use a simple multiple choice quiz format to review the idioms and proverbs. Typically, these are fixed vocabulary phrases, hence our young learners need to become familiar with the words used. In a multiple choice quiz format, we can encourage language play - the learners often find that an error in the phrase is quite funny! Eventually they will figure out the correct answer.

Thanks to the renewed excitement of international travel, we have some precious friends back in Singapore for a holiday. They have been enjoying English lessons with Teacher Libing for a few weeks.

The children are 7 and 5 years old, and they are learning together. Teacher Libing has put together various storybook units for them to keep in touch with the English Language. The younger learner is focused on phonics and reading, while the older learner is working on grammar and sentence construction. They also do some activities together, such as reading instructions for craft making and playing language games.

​Modern day learning provides students with many different tools. Yet the quality of learning does not always improve. Why is this so?

Perhaps there are too many tools out there and the students are lost? Maybe students think that they can check the Internet anytime anyway, so they end up not checking when they really should be?

I have been encouraging my students to go back to the dictionary. Be it a physical or digital dictionary, students have to get into the habit of checking words they partially or entirely don't understand. Sometimes we do pre-reading / pre-writing activities like Meaning Matching to help build a vocabulary bank.

Check it once and get a clear understanding. You can remember much better.
