Young Writers - Learning what writing is about

How do young writers get acquainted with and become better in writing? It is easy to say, let's write more and practise more, yet what does the process of writing actually look like? It can take at least 3 or 4 lessons to ensure sufficient exploration for a well crafted writing piece.

Here are some ideas from Ms Tan! (Writing samples from a lower primary student)

1) Free discussion of some picture prompts.

What do you think? Can you link these to your personal experiences? Are there any words or phrases that come to mind with these visuals? Organise the vocabulary for your understanding and usage.

2) Learn / Recap the basic structure of a story plot.

Have you read any stories that seem to follow this structure? Recall your reading and writing experiences. Use graphic organisers to plan your plot, setting and characters.

3) Drafting

Write freely, without interruption. Using your first draft as raw material, break down into each sentence and figure out if it can be rearranged, rewritten, or simply deleted. Add in more information. Fine-tune grammatical and spelling accuracy.

4) Writing an organised piece

Construct paragraphs that flow according to your plans for plot, setting and characters. Use vocabulary and grammar structures relevant to the messages you wish to communicate.

5) Reading for checking and further improvement

Put the writing aside and return to it later with a refreshed mind. Get someone else to read it for you. Fresh perspectives might appear to help you improve your writing further.
