Blend and Read Phonics Activities

How about some blending skills for K1 students (5-year-olds)? We had a game using picture cards from the word family -at and the student identified the pictures accordingly. (mat / cat / rat etc). A quick review of individual letter-sound correspondence was also done through Karuta / Snap game. Then we viewed a video phonics story about A Fat Cat. Using rhyme and knowledge of beginning, middle and end sounds, the young learners can practise reading short CVC words aloud.

Here is one of the students making the letters for the word he is trying to sound out. Play Clay / Play Dough is a tactile experience for young learners, engaging their senses and keeping them enthusiastic about sounding out each letter and blending 2 or 3 sounds into a word.
